Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik speaks to the media outside Mehran naval aviation base, which was attacked by militants, in Karachi May 23, 2011.

More than a dozen gunmen attacked Pakistan’s naval aviation base yesterday, blowing up an aircraft and fighting pitched gunbattles inside one of the country’s most heavily guarded military installations.

Officials said up to four people had been killed in the attack on PNS Mehran in the southern city of Karachi and that three hangars housing aircraft had been targeted. Nine explosions were reported from the base, with jet fuel tanks possibly catching fire and exploding.

A lone gunman shot dead six people with an automatic weapon as he walked calmly through a Dutch shopping mall yesterday, and threatened to blow up three other shopping malls before eventually killing himself.

Panicked shoppers ran for cover or hid in shops after the gunman opened fire at random at the mall in the small town of Alphen aan den Rijn, some 46km south of Amsterdam.

Dressed in camouflage trousers and a bomber jacket, the gunman began shooting in a parking lot before moving inside the mall. Ten people were wounded, some seriously.

“I saw a woman I know walking at the other side,” Marjolein Nieuwland told the ANP news agency. “She wanted to enter a shop when a tall young man approached and shot her in cold blood.
“He walked calmly and shot through the windows of the shop where I was hiding.

“I also saw a woman in her motorised wheelchair shot in the head, and at the Albert Heijn (grocery store) there was a young man. Also dead. Later I heard that was the shooter,” she said.

Officials named the gunman as Tristan van der Vlis, 24, a local man who lived in the town with his father.

Police said gunshots were still ringing out when they arrived at the scene on receiving an emergency call shortly after midday.

Pupils in the Brazilian school where a gunman went on a murderous rampage can be seen fleeing for their lives in images captured on a security camera in the corridor.

Wellington de Oliveira, 24, killed 13 children and injured 20 more in yesterday's attack on Tasso de Oliveira elementary school in the Realengo suburb of Rio de Janeiro.

In one CCTV image, the former pupil can be seen holding his gun outside the classroom where he launched his bloody spree before turning the weapon on himself.

The gunman roamed the halls of the school for children aged 10 to 15, lining his victims against a wall and shooting them in the head at point blank range as he shouted 'I'm going to kill you all!'

India court upholds death sentence for Mumbai attacker

India’s High Court today upheld the death sentence for the only surviving gunman in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people and strained ties between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani national, was one of ten gunmen who carried out the coordinated attacks on key landmarks in India’s financial capital, including two luxury hotels, the main train station and a Jewish centre.

In May, Kasab was found guilty of more than 80 charges, including murder and waging war on India, and was sentenced to death by hanging by an Indian court but that sentence needed approval from the High Court.

New York taxi drivers to wear bulletproof vests in pilot scheme

Safety: The scheme for New York cabbies to wear bulletproof vests has been started following a fatal shooting in June
New York taxi drivers are notable for their unique yellow cabs.

But soon they could have something else to distinguish them: bulletproof vests.

A dozen Big Apple cab drivers, who have to work in suburbs with high crime-rates, have been selected to pilot the scheme.

The president of the New York Federation of Taxi Drivers, Fernando Mateo, believes the vests will provide another - potentially vital - layer of protection for drivers in high-crime areas.

Mr Mateo said there are some 300 robberies and assaults against New York taxi drivers every month.

'One shooting is a lot and whatever we can do to help improve the safety of our drivers is something that we will do,' he said.

Bulletproof: To begin with about a dozen taxi drivers will use the vests - but if the NYPD hand over their old vests, the numbers could increase soon enough

TSA under fire after businessman boards international flight with loaded handgun

Security scare: According to leaked reports, security at a number of U.S. airports has been frequently breached

The effectiveness of security at U.S. ports is being questioned after a businessman accidentally travelled on a flight with a loaded handgun in his luggage.

Iranian-American Farid Seif was screened by Trasport Security Administration officials at Houston airport in Texas. His hand luggage was also X-rayed before he took off on his international flight.

It wasn't until Mr Seif arrived at his hotel several hours later that he realised that he had forgotten to unpack a loaded snub nose Glock pistol from his luggage before he embarked on his journey.

Terror on campus: Students dive for cover as gunman carrying AK47 opens fire in library of University of Texas

A man wearing a ski mask opened fire with an AK-47 inside a University of Texas library yesterday morning, then fatally shot himself, police said.

Colton Tooley, a 19-year-old maths sophomore wearing a ski mask and a dark suit, began shooting near a fountain in front of the UT Tower.

The site is infamous for being the site of one of America's deadliest shooting rampages more than four decades ago, when a gunman ascended the clock tower and fired down on dozens of people.

He then turned the gun on himself. No one else was killed or injured - despite there being many people around.

The nearly 50,000-student campus was put on lockdown while officers with bomb-sniffing dogs carried out a building-by-building manhunt for a possible second suspect.

The moment robbers armed with Kalashnikovs raid Bureau de Change and escape with hostage

This is the moment armed robbers raided a Bureau de Change in broad daylight, making off with bags of cash and gold.

Extraordinary pictures show how the four men, wearing balaclavas over their heads and dressed top to toe in black, held up the shop in the centre of Lyon in France.

The raid yesterday happened at around 3.15pm - and it was all the more audacious because the Bureau de Change is right opposite the city's town hall.

The robbers, who witnesses said were armed with Kalashnikovs, could be seen climbing running in and out of the building.

Devout Muslim woman kills two female co-workers in gun rampage at food factory

A devout Muslim woman killed two people and seriously wounded a third in a gun rampage at the U.S. food factory where she worked today.

In the latest workplace shooting to hit the U.S., Yvonne Hiller, who was described as 'spiritual' by a co-worker, walked back into the Kraft Foods factory in Philadelphia and attacked colleagues, police said.

Just 10 minutes before the .357 Magnum handgun shootings, she was escorted from the building as managers investigated an undisclosed incident.

An hour later, police arrested Hiller at the the factory which manufactures Oreo cookies, Philadelphia cream cheese and Oscar Mayer bacon.

She was today facing question from detectives investigating the killings.

Hiller, who worked at the plant for 15 years, was suspended from her job and escorted from the premises, said Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey.

Nine minutes later, she drove through a fence surrounding the plant and entered the building armed with a .357 magnum handgun, Ramsey said.

She then went to the third-floor mixing room - where she worked as a mixer, co-workers said - and opened fire.

Police kill gunman who held 3 at Discovery Channel

A man who railed against the Discovery Channel's environmental programming for years burst into the company's headquarters with at least one explosive device strapped to his body Wednesday and took three people hostage at gunpoint before police shot him to death, officials said.

80,000 in Hong Kong protest Philippine bus tragedy

An estimated 80,000 Hong Kongers marched Sunday in honor of eight locals killed in a bus hijacking in Manila, denouncing the Philippine government for botching the rescue operation and demanding justice for the dead.

Former Philippine police officer Rolando Mendoza commandeered a bus carrying a 20-member Hong Kong tour group visiting the Philippine capital last week, hoping to reverse his dismissal from the force on what he said were bogus robbery and extortion charges.

Mendoza released several children and elderly hostages early in the 12-hour standoff broadcast live on television, but later opened fire on the tourists. A police sniper shot and killed Mendoza — but not before eight tourists were killed by gunfire. Three others were seriously wounded, including one still in a coma.
