Row as French mayor bans under-18s from art exhibition showing X-rated photos of teenagers having sex and taking drugs

The Mayor of Paris has come under fire for banning under-18s from a museum's photographic exhibition because it includes sexually explicit shots of teenagers.

The move by Bertrand Delanoe against influential American photographer Larry Clark has been branded 'backward and reactionary' by the French Human Rights League.

The show, Kiss The Past Hello, includes some graphic black and white images of teenagers kissing and fondling each other.

Mr Delanoe fears legal challenges if he lets minors into the exhibit by Clark, 67, who is also a filmmaker best known for his controversial 1995 film Kids with its raw portrayal of teens, sex and drugs.

A 2007 French law forbids showing pornographic images to minors under 18 and is punishable with up to three years' jail and a fine of £75,000.

The pop star — who is known for her risque outfits — wore a gold bustier top as she sang a version of her hit "Hot N Cold." But some felt it was too revealing for the kid set.

Miss Australia literally STABBED in the back by Miss Universe contestant

When Australian beauty queen Jesinta Campbell entered the Miss Universe pageant she learnt the hard way that backstabbing among the contestants wasn't just words.

One of her competitors, she has now revealed, laced her national costume with pins, which stuck into her skin and made her wince as she walked on to the stage in the competition last month.

Her outfit was perfect for concealing the handiwork of her mysterious and apparently jealous assailant - it was a swirling flamenco-style dress decorated with Aboriginal-style art.

Ms Campbell, 19, from Queensland's Gold Coast, finished third in the Las Vegas contest which drew beautiful women from 82 other countries.

Minister slams ‘vulgar’ modern Chinese culture

China’s culture minister took aim at the country’s booming broadcasting and publishing industries on Friday, saying much of what they produced was “vulgar” and “kitsch”.

“We publish more than 300,000 books every year, but how many of them could be compared with the scriptures inherited from our ancestors?” Cai Wu told state news agency Xinhua.

“We produce some 400 movies and hundreds of TV drama programmes each year, but how many of them will be recognised as classics?”

Too many Chinese publications fill their pages with “gossip and sensational stories that advocate money worship and consumerism”, the report paraphrased him as saying.

'Very graphic': Lisa Bullivant withdrew her daughter from the school after the film was shown

A mother has taken her seven-year-old daughter out of school after she was made to watch a cartoon showing a couple chasing each other around a bed and having sex.

Seven and eight-year-old pupils watched the controversial Channel 4 sex education DVD, Living and Growing, at their village primary school.

A voice-over on the DVD describes the sex as 'exciting'.
Lisa Bullivant, from Legbourne, Lincolnshire, was so upset by the 'graphic' content, she took her daughter out of East Wold Primary School and placed her with another school.

Mrs Bullivant said: 'The cartoon was very graphic. My daughter was frightened and children have unfortunately been copying what they have seen. Parents should have been given the decision of whether the video should have been shown or not.

'Seven to nine-year-olds should not possess this knowledge. There is no educational or psychological benefit or need for children of this age to have full knowledge of what sexual intercourse actually entails.'

The school sent parents a letter saying they could view the film before it was shown to pupils, but Mrs Bullivant and several other parents were unable to attend the screening.
She said: 'We had no reason to think we needed to. You never think in a million years that would be taught to seven-year-olds.

'We had faith in the head teacher and the school that all they would be learning would be basic puberty. It should have said in the letter children would learn how to have sexual intercourse.'

Mrs Bullivant, who did not want to name her daughter, complained to head teacher Lesley Thornes and the school's governors, and wants a meeting with the director of education at Lincolnshire council.

Debbie Barnes, assistant director of children's services at the council, said: 'The DVD has been recommended for use in schools by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and is seen as appropriate for the age group. We are sorry Mrs Bullivant has taken this view, but we are happy with the school's approach in using the DVD for the benefit of its pupils and their education.'
Mrs Thornes refused to comment. Thousands of the Channel 4 sex education packs have been sold to primary schools across the country.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: 'Living and Growing has been in the marketplace for nearly ten years and has been very well-received by the educational community.

'Living and Growing was developed in response to requests for a resource that promotes sex and relationship education as a developmental process.

'One of our most popular series, it has successfully supported schools and primary care trusts across the UK to address one of the most sensitive themes of the healthy schools curriculum initiative in a factual and age-appropriate way.'

The plus-size models that prove fashion is finally ready to embrace larger women

First there was Dove's 'real women' campaign, then there was Beth Ditto, but to date it seems that larger women have failed to become anything more than a novelty in fashion.

After all, Sophie Dahl, the original plus-size model, eventually lost the weight that made her so famous, Kate Moss continues to live by the mantra: 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels', and only last year Ralph Lauren famously airbrushed a model to look so thin, her head was wider than her waist.

But could 2010 be the year that curves finally come of age?
V Magazine certainly believes that is the case, so much so that it has dedicated an entire issue to women of different shapes and sizes.

'The Size Issue', which hits news stands on January 14, features a high-fashion photo shoot starring no less than five curvaceous bombshells.
The images, by Norwegian fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo, see the models wearing everything from figure-hugging Agent Provocateur bodysuits to cut-out Gucci swimsuits.

One wears Dolce & Gabbana lingerie, while another dramatically poses in nothing but a slick of red lipstick.

The girls unashamedly flaunt full thighs, stomach rolls and love handles - things that would normally be airbrushed out on a high fashion magazine.
Sundsbo said: 'I loved the opportunity to show that you can be beautiful and sexy outside the narrow interpretations that normally define us.'

The same issue sees famed plus-size model Crystal Renn take on the slender Jacquelyn Jablonski, who at 17, has already modelled for Calvin Klein Jeans and Proenza Schouler.

And the U.S. glossy could well be on the money with its theme. Over the past few months, gap-toothed supermodel Lara Stone - who is currently dating David Walliams - has become famous in her own right thanks to her 'va-va voom' size 8 figure (most models are a UK size 4-6).
Gossip singer Beth Ditto's collection for Evans was a runaway success, with some items selling out in days.

And who could forget the media storm surrounding British designer Mark Fast's London Fashion Week show in September, after his stylist allegedly walked out over a decision to use plus-size models.

The models in question proved how sexy Fast's clingy knitted dresses could look on a curvaceous body, making them a sellout at Brown's, the London boutique in which they were sold.
So could skinny finally be on its way out? Realistically, no.

Even Stone, who is, by normal standards, very slim, admitted: ‘A lot of people say it’s nice to see someone who won’t break in half when you touch them. But I am still a woman and a person, and if you’re compared and confronted with your colleagues, and they’re all half your size, you think, “F***, I’m really fat!”’

But it seems that the fashion world is slowly making progress by beginning to accept more varied body shapes, and that there remains plenty of opportunity to embrace women that really look like women.

A Chinese city with one of the nation's highest rates of AIDS has opened a government-funded gay bar in an outreach effort that has stirred debate over the use of taxpayers' money.

The health department in Dali, a picturesque city on a lake in southwestern Yunnan province, funded the bar to reach out to China's increasingly open gay community. Dali is one of the 10 cities in China most affected by AIDS.

Same-sex transmission accounts for about one-third of new HIV infections in China, the minister of health said this month.

"Some readers think that it's a waste of taxpayer money, or an indirect endorsement of homosexual behavior," the Beijing News said in an opinion piece on Monday, citing letters to the editor after it ran an article on the bar over the weekend.

"They think if there were another way to reach out to the gay community, it wouldn't be necessary to open a bar."

Founder Zhang Jianbo hopes that the bar will be a public gathering place for gay men, especially from rural villages, who used to gather in a patch of woods near the historic town.

The bar offers sex education and free condoms, in addition to companionship, Zhang said in an interview with the newspaper.

Though funded by the government, the bar is staffed by volunteers from a local non-government organization that works to prevent AIDS.

"Each year, the Dali city government spends 20,000 yuan ($2,929) on treatment drugs for AIDS. So if our bar succeeds in reducing transmission, our 120,000 yuan will be well-spend," Jiang Anmin, deputy director of health in Dali, told the paper.

China's gay community for decades lived in fear of discrimination and prejudice, with the earliest gay bars often the targets of police raids and closures while homosexuals often married women to avoid family and social pressures.

China now has about 100,000 known AIDS cases, but some health experts worry that HIV could spread easily among migrant workers and other hard-to-reach sectors. The government has switched to a strategy of outreach to the gay community, as part of efforts over the past few years to fight the spread of HIV.

"In the past the government relied on NGOs to reach out to the gay community," Bing Lan, director of outreach organization Aibai, told Reuters.

"Now there's a change, in that some local health bureaus feel they are able to reach out to the community themselves."

But one unintended consequence of outreach efforts in parks, bars and bathhouses frequented by gay men, Bing said, is that some gay men now avoid those haunts for fear of being found out.

"Today I saw a blog, saying that when the bar in Dali has its official opening on World Aids Day, no-one will dare to go because there will be too many reporters there," he said.
