Chinese girl, 9, becomes one of world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a baby boy

A nine-year-old Chinese schoolgirl has become one of the world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a healthy boy.

The unnamed girl was brought to a hospital in Changchun, which lies in the north-east of the country, when she was eight and a half months pregnant.

Two days later, she gave birth to the 6lb boy by Caesarean section, a Chinese newspaper has reported.

The child comes from the nearby town of Songyuan. Her family refused to discuss the pregnancy, but confirmed they had reported it to the police.

Last night police were reportedly trying to establish who the father is.

In the province, sex with a child under the age of 14 brings an automatic rape conviction and a lengthy jail sentence.

A legal expert told the paper that women under the age of 14 do not have sexual rights - 'so any argument of being consensual as a defence is completely untenable,' he said.

He added: 'Anyone who had sexual relations with a girl under 14 means they have committed rape and is to be punished severely.'

A hospital in China's largest city, Shanghai, recently said that about 30 per cent of abortions were on school-aged girls.

The youngest reported mother in the world - and the most bizarre of all young pregnancy cases - is five-year-old Lina Medina of Peru, who gave birth to a 6lb son named Gerardo in a Caesarean operation in 1939.
Her father was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse but was later released because of lack of evidence.

In 1957 another Peruvian girl, aged nine, gave birth to a girl weighing just over 6lb and, curiously, it was in 2006 that yet another Peruvian girl, aged eight, gave birth to a 4lb 4oz girl.

Several other girls aged nine, from Thailand, Singapore, Rwanda and Brazil, have also given birth.

Mothers aged as young as 10 and 11 have also become an increasing occurrence.

The youngest mother in Britain is believed to have been 11 when she got pregnant and 12 years old when she gave birth.

GIRLS REACHING PUBERTY AT EVER YOUNGER AGES

Menstruation usually starts at the age of 12 but it is not uncommon for it start earlier. In the western world children are reaching puberty at younger and younger ages - some girls at the age of seven. Many blame rising obesity rates because, generally, girls who achieve menstruation earlier in life tend to have greater body mass index and a higher ratio of fat compared to those who begin menstruation later. University of Bristol research has suggested one girl in six reaches puberty before the age of eight - 18 months earlier than their mothers. Periods are a sign that a girl is now releasing fertile eggs which makes her able to conceive

Solo sailing girl, 14, arrives back in the Netherlands... to face a police interrogation

Dreams: Laura Dekker, 14, who was blocked from a round-the-world sailing attempt, is reported to have been found in the Caribbean territory of St Maarten

The 14-year-old Dutch sailor who disappeared from home and flew to the Caribbean, has arrived back in the Netherlands.

Laura Dekker is being interviewed by police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and will then be turned over to child care authorities.

Dekker was shielded from waiting media after her arrival early on Tuesday morning on a flight from the Netherlands Antilles island of Curacao.

She made headlines earlier this year when a court banned her from attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

Police now want to know how she managed to fly to the island of St. Maarten and whether anybody helped her.

Laura's 26ft yacht, Guppy, remained at its usual mooring point in the Netherlands.

Yesterday police spokesman Bernhard Jens said: 'We have a number of questions for her, including: How did this happen? Why did you go? How did you go? Did you go with somebody else?'

Born on her parents' boat in New Zealand, Laura spent the first four years of her life at sea and had intended to start a two-year solo, global voyage, but the Utrecht District Court ruled she was too inexperienced.

She had been living with her divorced father, a keen sailor.

Laura could be taken into care, said a government spokesman.

Having spoken briefly with Dekker on Sunday, family spokeswoman Mariska Woertman said Dekker was doing well 'under the circumstances,' but that 'we haven't had any time to talk yet about the reasons why.

'What exactly has been going on over the past few days or weeks. We just have to wait until she is back home and speak to her about that.'

Dekker's planned trip would have made her the youngest person to embark on a solo circumnavigation, but judges ruled she was too inexperienced and ill-prepared to set sail.

That decision took a heavy toll on Dekker and could explain her decision to run away from home.

The court also appointed a temporary guardian for Dekker, though it allowed her to keep living with her divorced father, also a keen sailor and seen as a driving force behind her plan to sail around the world.

The court wanted to ensure he could not allow her to set off without first consulting child care authorities.

Dekker's mother has remained largely out of the picture, but said in a newspaper interview she considered her daughter too young to make the round-the-world trip.

'We think we know the reason,' said Joost Lanshage of Bureau Youth Care, which appointed her temporary court-ordered guardian.

'She had a dream and it fell apart - that round-the-world trip. In the end she collapsed under the weight of the attention that generated and the dream being shattered. She is looking for some order.'

The Utrecht District Court had banned the trip until at least July 2010, but Dekker worried she wouldn't be allowed to set sail then either, even as she continued preparations, Woertman said.

'She felt pressured about the whole situation and everybody that wanted something from her,' Woertman said.

'She didn't feel that confident any more that one day she could really sail away.'

Jens said police would decide whether to speak to anybody else based on what Dekker tells them when she returns home.

What happens after that and whether Dekker is allowed to remain living with her father has yet to be decided.

A court spokesman said any decision was up to her temporary guardian, with whom her father must consult about any important decisions in Dekker's life.

Lanshage said his organisation spoke to both Dekker and her father last week before she fled, but declined to give details, citing privacy rules.

It is possible Dekker could be taken into state care, said Richard Bakker, a spokesman for the government's Child Protection Agency.

Woertman would not speculate on what might ultimately happen to Dekker or what her unannounced trip might mean for her trip plans.

'We hope we will be able to make things clear for her in her head and her heart,' she said. 'It has all been very emotional for her.'

11 year old girl die while running marathon.Said i think i am going to die then collapse.

Shock: Rianna Wingett was leading a cross-country race during a PE lesson when she collapsed and died in front of Year Seven pupils

Tragic loss: The 'sports mad' youngster was keen on horses. She may have suffered from a pre-existing heart condition

Rianna's father is a governor at Abbs Cross School. Her sister is also a pupil

An 'extremely fit' schoolgirl collapsed and died at the end of a cross country run a day before her 12th birthday.

Rianna Wingett told a classmate, 'Oh God, I think I'm going to die,' after running two laps of the sports field at Abbs Cross School in Hornchurch, Essex.

The youngster's PE teacher, Claire Pilling, battled to save Rianna with mouth-to-mouth resuscitaion and CPR as her horrified Year Seven classmates looked on.

One friend said Rianna's last words were: 'I love you all.'

The sports-mad 11-year-old was leading the race when she keeled over.

She was rushed to Queen's Hospital in nearby Romford as paramedics fought to revive her, but she was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem has yet to be carried out on the youngster, who was keen on horses and only joined the school in September.

Rianna's devastated father, John, is a governor at the school. Her older sister, Sarah, 14, is also a pupil there.

Abbs Cross headmaster, Glen Mayoh, said the schoolgirl had 'no known pre-existing medical conditions'.

In a letter to parents and governors, he said: 'Rianna Wingett collapsed towards the end of her PE lesson just before lunchtime on Friday.

'Despite immediate first aid treatment from PE staff and the efforts of paramedic officers who were called to the scene, sadly Rianna was pronounced dead at Queen's Hospital later on Friday afternoon.

'Rianna was a delightful girl who enjoyed all aspects of her school life. She was helpful, hard- working and enthusiastic.

'This tragic event is one that will be felt very deeply by the whole school community, especially those who knew Rianna personally.

'It has come as a great shock to us all and in particular those close to Rianna and her sister Sarah who will receive all the appropriate support we can provide.

'We send our heartfelt sympathy to Rianna's family; they are, and will remain, in our thoughts at this most difficult time.'

Three Facebook tribute pages have been launched since the incident last Friday, attracting thousands of members.

One school friend posted a message describing what happened. It said: 'We had to run two laps round our field. The last words she said to me were "Oh God I feel like I'm going to die". Mrs May called the ambulance.'

Another friend said Rianna's last words to her friends were 'I love you all'.

Danielle Wherton posted: 'She died what she loved doing, we wer all pround of her and of course u wer 2 x r.i.p. rianna u little star, u will neva be 4gotten xx.'

Another friend wrote: 'I can’t believe it. She was the best. She had the best personality anyone could ask 4.

'I will remember every day we spent together and every great moment that we shared. I don't feel the same without you, my heart feels like it's missing a piece out of it. I wish I could spend one more day with you.'

Another poignant message simply reads: 'Gone too soon, Little One.'
