An 'extremely fit' schoolgirl collapsed and died at the end of a cross country run a day before her 12th birthday.

Rianna Wingett told a classmate, 'Oh God, I think I'm going to die,' after running two laps of the sports field at Abbs Cross School in Hornchurch, Essex.

The youngster's PE teacher, Claire Pilling, battled to save Rianna with mouth-to-mouth resuscitaion and CPR as her horrified Year Seven classmates looked on.

One friend said Rianna's last words were: 'I love you all.'

The sports-mad 11-year-old was leading the race when she keeled over.

She was rushed to Queen's Hospital in nearby Romford as paramedics fought to revive her, but she was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem has yet to be carried out on the youngster, who was keen on horses and only joined the school in September.

Rianna's devastated father, John, is a governor at the school. Her older sister, Sarah, 14, is also a pupil there.

Abbs Cross headmaster, Glen Mayoh, said the schoolgirl had 'no known pre-existing medical conditions'.

In a letter to parents and governors, he said: 'Rianna Wingett collapsed towards the end of her PE lesson just before lunchtime on Friday.

'Despite immediate first aid treatment from PE staff and the efforts of paramedic officers who were called to the scene, sadly Rianna was pronounced dead at Queen's Hospital later on Friday afternoon.

'Rianna was a delightful girl who enjoyed all aspects of her school life. She was helpful, hard- working and enthusiastic.

'This tragic event is one that will be felt very deeply by the whole school community, especially those who knew Rianna personally.

'It has come as a great shock to us all and in particular those close to Rianna and her sister Sarah who will receive all the appropriate support we can provide.

'We send our heartfelt sympathy to Rianna's family; they are, and will remain, in our thoughts at this most difficult time.'

Three Facebook tribute pages have been launched since the incident last Friday, attracting thousands of members.

One school friend posted a message describing what happened. It said: 'We had to run two laps round our field. The last words she said to me were "Oh God I feel like I'm going to die". Mrs May called the ambulance.'

Another friend said Rianna's last words to her friends were 'I love you all'.

Danielle Wherton posted: 'She died what she loved doing, we wer all pround of her and of course u wer 2 x r.i.p. rianna u little star, u will neva be 4gotten xx.'

Another friend wrote: 'I can’t believe it. She was the best. She had the best personality anyone could ask 4.

'I will remember every day we spent together and every great moment that we shared. I don't feel the same without you, my heart feels like it's missing a piece out of it. I wish I could spend one more day with you.'

Another poignant message simply reads: 'Gone too soon, Little One.'
