Wife of Robert Kennedy Jr charged with drink-driving after hitting a kerb outside a school
Mary Richardson Kennedy, second right, walks with her husband Robert and their children to view the casket of Senator Edward Kennedy at last year's wake
She married the son of assassinated politician Robert F. Kennedy in 1994, the brother of John F Kennedy who was murdered in 1963.
It was their brother Edward Kennedy whose political career was blighted by the 1969 Chappaquiddick scandal in which he drove a car off a bridge, leading to the death of his female companion Mary Jo Kopechne.
He fled the scene of the accident and never fully explained what had happened.
Mary Richardson is Robert Kennedy Jr's second wife and the couple have four children.
The wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr has been charged with drink-driving after a police officer saw her run over a kerb outside a school.
Mary Richardson Kennedy, 50, was arrested on Saturday in Bedford, in the state of New York, after she recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 per cent. The legal limit is 0.08 per cent.
She told the arresting officer that she was at the school to pick up people from a carnival. Police authorities will not say whether anyone else was in the car at the time
Since her arrest was reported it has also come to light that police officers visited the Kennedy home twice in the last week, on May 10 and May 13, but a police spokesman said those visits were unrelated to the arrest.
In one call, Kennedy reported a dispute between children.
The other visit resulted in a state domestic incident report, but there were 'no crimes committed, no report of assault, no arrests and no need for follow-up', the officer said.
He declined to elaborate.
