Chinese demand ban on goldfish magic trick watched by hundreds of millions on TV amid claims of animal abuse
A magic trick with goldfish that was watched by hundreds of millions of Chinese on TV during the Lunar New Year celebrations may have involved abuse including implanted magnets and should be banned, according to animal rights activists.
The trick was performed during a China Central Television gala on January 30, eve of the Lunar New Year festival. The gala is China's most watched broadcast of the year.
Goldfish are a symbol of wealth in China, but the image of six of them swimming in perfect synchronisation under magician Fu Yandong's direction alarmed many Chinese, who worried that magnets were implanted in the fish or that they were controlled by electric current.

Nails removed from 'abused' maid in Arab Saudi
A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid after she complained of a too heavy workload by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, officials said on Thursday.
Nearly 2 million Sri Lankans sought employment overseas last year and around 1.4 million, mostly maids, were employed in the Middle East. Many have complained of physical abuse or harassment.
L.T. Ariyawathi, a 49-year old mother of three, returned on Friday after five months in Saudi Arabia.

Pope promises "action" on sexual abuse crisis-Used indirect reference to abuse victims.More protests.

Pope Benedict, who has come under fire from victims' groups for using vague language about the Roman Catholic sexual abuse crisis, Wednesday publicly promised Church "action" to counter the scandal.
In the past month since the sexual abuse crisis has exploded, with allegations mushrooming in the United States, Austria and his native Germany, he has used vague terms such as how the Church was "wounded by our sins" or needed "penance."
Speaking at his general audience, he used the word "abuse" in public for the first time in more than a month, a period in which the scandal has spread extensively and developed into the greatest crisis of his five-year pontificate.
Summarizing his weekend trip to Malta at his weekly general audience in St Peter' Square, Benedict said:
"I wanted to meet some people who were victims of abuse by members of the clergy. I shared with them their suffering and with emotion I prayed with them, promising them action on the part of the Church."
Victims groups had demanded the pope say something directly in public instead of using indirect reference and generalities.

Bewildered and tethered to a window these Chinese children reflect the desperate plight faced by migrant workers in the world's most populous country.
Unable to afford even the most rudimentary child care, the parents have to bring their youngsters to work with them.
These images were taken in a factory in the city of Jiaxing in the south east of the country where the parents toil for ten hours a day. There are an estimated 110million migrant workers in China aged between 16 and 40 years old.
But there is no creche where the children can be dropped off.

Six Arrested After Girl, 7, Is Gang-Raped in New Jersey-7-year-old NJ girl sold like prostitute by stepsister

The girl's own 15-year-old stepsister sold her like a prostitute at the party, police said.

The developments followed an intense, weeklong inquiry into what occurred on March 28 in a 13th-floor apartment at the Rowan Towers complex on West State Street, near the State Capitol. Officials said they expected to make more arrests in the coming days.
Investigators arrested one man, Gregory Joseph Leary, 20, of Trenton, on Thursday and charged him with raping the 15-year-old girl, whom the authorities did not identify. Another man Tiemear Lewis, 19, of Trenton, was also charged in the case, officials said.
Joseph L. Bocchini Jr., the Mercer County prosecutor, said his office would likely seek to try at least one of three juveniles who were charged, ages 17, 14 and 13, in adult court.
But the 15-year-old girl may have been more than a victim, the authorities said.
She also was arrested this week on aggravated sexual assault and other charges “for her role in allowing her 7-year-old sister to be sexually assaulted,” the police said in a statement. The girl was remanded to the Mercer County Youth Detention Center.
Trenton officials said that the 15-year-old is accused of first having sex for money herself, then accepting cash to let men touch the 7-year-old. That touching then led to rape by multiple men, according to the investigation, which is continuing, officials said.
At a news conference at the city’s police headquarters on Saturday evening, Mayor Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton said: “Good people came forward to try and get justice for this 7-year-old angel, who was brutally gang-raped by pedophile animals. Everyone that was responsible is still not arrested. Police won’t rest until we get every one.”
Officials said the two sisters went together to a party in the high-rise, where they were both assaulted.
The 7-year-old girl told the police she knew the party was trouble, but she went because she wanted to protect her sister, Mr. Palmer said. Both girls had been on the blotters of various child welfare services, he said.
The girls had been reported missing to the Trenton police at the time of the episode, Mr. Bocchini said.
Mr. Palmer said the 7-year-old met him at his office on Thursday, and he gave her a stuffed Easter bunny. But the family will soon be moved out of the area, he said, because “she will be stigmatized.”
Mr. Palmer said the girl told him: “Everybody’s staring at me. They know it’s me.”
Two adults and three juveniles were arrested Saturday for the gang rape of a 7-year-old Trenton, N.J. girl who was sold like a prostitute by her stepsister, cops said.
The horrible crime happened at a crowded apartment last Sunday. The teen left the girl unattended while she had sex for money with several men, cops said.
After she was done, the teen told her stepsister to let the men touch her.
"It went from touching to straight out assault and rape," Trenton Police Capt. Joseph Juniak said at the time. "They threatened to kill her if she screamed or told anyone."
The stepsister was charged with aggravated sexual assault, promoting prostitution and other crimes.
Details of Saturday's arrests were not immediately available.

Report to detail alleged abuse inside CIA secret prisons
Attorney General Eric Holder is considering appointing a prosecutor to investigate a CIA interrogation program.
President Obama's Attorney-General Eric Holder is expected to make clear whether he will appoint a criminal prosecutor to investigate alleged abuse by CIA officials
CIA interrogators threatened an al Qaeda prisoner with a gun and an electric drill to try to scare him into giving up information, according to a long-concealed inspector-general's report due to be made public on Monday, sources familiar with the report confirmed to CNN.
The gun and drill were used in two separate interrogation sessions against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, one of the sources said. Al-Nashiri is accused of plotting the 2000 attack on the USS Cole, which left 17 U.S. sailors dead.
The alleged crimes and abuses carried out under the Bush Administration will take centre stage today with the release of a report detailing brutal CIA interrogations, a document that could trigger criminal investigations later this week.
The CIA inspector-general’s report claims that the harsh interrogation of terror suspects was ineffective, and produced no valuable intelligence.
In another episode, a gunshot was fired in a room next to a detainee to make the prisoner believe another suspect had been executed. It is illegal under US torture statutes to threaten a detainee with imminent death.
Democrats are particularly focused on Bush-era Justice Department officials who wrote legal opinions for the CIA that justified techniques including waterboarding, and who claimed that threats of imminent death were legal if they did not cause permanent mental harm.
Mr al-Nashiri’s interrogation sessions were videotaped, but the tapes were destroyed by CIA officials in 2005. A federal prosecutor is now investigating the circusmtances of their destruction.
Other documents expected to be released today include memos that former Vice-President Dick Cheney has said prove that harsh interrogation techniques produced valuable intelligence about al-Qaeda.
Mr Cheney said earlier this year that he had seen documents containing evidence that lives had been saved because of “enhanced” interrogations. If such a document emerges today the emotive debate about the effectiveness of torture will be reignited.

They disappeared: Are they dead? Are they alive? Some were in secret CIA prisons in Europe and the United States, tortured with the help of several nations. Some who survived the Western torture are being released due to international pressure, and the Red Cross this week presented an International Red Cross Report about Torture in secret CIA prisons globally. The secret prisons and torture were probaly located in Europe and the United States, but both sides refuse to give any comment on this issue.
Senior CIA official Mary O. McCarthy couldn't take it anymore and provided classified information about CIA secret prisons in Europe to The Washington Post's Dana Priest. After that the CIA fired him, and refusing any further comment about the existence of the "black sites" in Europe. Europe also refuses to give any comment

US Occupation Forces Torture Iraqi POW's
Photographs of alleged prisoner abuse that Barack Obama is attempting to censor include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse, it has emerged.

""--Today, new photographs were sent to La Voz de Aztlan from confidential sources depicting the shocking rapes of two Iraqi women by what are purported to be US Military Intelligence personnel and private US mercenaries in military fatigues. It is now known that hundreds of these photographs had been in circulation among the troops in Iraq. The graphic photos were being swapped between the soldiers like baseball cards.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one Mexican-American soldier told La Voz de Aztlan, “Maybe the officers didn’t know what was going on, but everybody else did. I have seen literally hundreds of these types of pictures.” Many of the pictures were destroyed last September when the luggage of soldiers was searched as they left Iraq, he said
An investigation, led by Army Major General Antonio M. Taguba, identified two military intelligence officers and two civilian contractors for the Army as key figures in the abuse cases at the Abu Ghraib prison. In an internal report on his findings, Major General Taguba said he suspected that the four were “either directly or indirectly responsible for the abuses at Abu Ghraib and strongly recommended disciplinary action.”
The Taguba report states that “military intelligence interrogators and other U.S. Government Agency interrogators actively requested that Military Police guards set physical and mental conditions for favorable interrogation of witnesses.” The report noted that one civilian interrogator, a contractor from a company called CACI International and attached to the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade, “clearly knew his instructions” to the Military Police equated to physical and sexual abuse. It is not known whether these instructions included, or led to, the raping of Iraqi women detainees as well. --"" source google.com
