Undercover beauty queen aged 10: A mother and daughter go behind the scenes at one of the U.S.-style child beauty pageants spreading over Britain

Sunday mornings usually find me reading the papers in bed, eating pancakes with my children or taking the dog for a walk.

Today, however, I am standing in a hotel ladies’ toilet with my ten-year-old daughter, trying to prise her feet into a pair of ridiculously strappy high-heeled shoes.

‘Ow, Mummy, that HURTS,’ Annie protests loudly, attracting a smug glance from another mother who is viciously sticking curling pins into the hair — and occasionally the head — of her silent, uncomplaining daughter.

Outside, in a vast conference room, chaos is brewing. Girls as young as three are being coaxed into strappy dresses and adorned with body glitter, as their mothers — all tight white jeans, manicured nails and enough bling to accessorise the whole of Essex — fight for wall sockets to plug in hair straighteners.

Welcome to the UK Cinderella Beauty Pageant at the decidedly unglamorous Ramada Hotel in Ealing, West London, a stone’s throw from the North Circular.

This is the latest event in a disturbing trend that is fast gaining ground in the UK and could soon be taking place in a three-star hotel near you.

Unsurprisingly, this pageant originated in America 36 years ago. It was launched here two years ago by former model Diana Hare.

Today, there are 24 contestants, ranging in age from three to 16. Their sights are set firmly on Las Vegas, since that is where one winner and her posse of family hangers-on will be heading to compete in a ‘sister’ pageant.

Could most modern art be done by an 8-year-old? This child prodigy proves that it can!

She hasn't even started secondary school, let alone art school, but this pocket-sized genius has already been acclaimed by art critics and collectors alike.

Meet Autumn de Forest who at just eight years old is the world's youngest conceptual artist.

She has been compared to past masters such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso and is talked about as one of the world's only authentic artistic child geniuses.

Offering up her work for auction since February of this year, Autumn has already raked in $200,000 and she has only been painting since she was five.

Chelsea Clinton Weds at Exclusive NY Estate-America's 'Royal' Wedding-Clintons on Eve of Chelsea's Wedding

Happy family: (left to right) Marc Mezvinsky with Hillary Clinton, his bride Chelsea and father-in-law Bill Clinton after the couple's wedding

Chelsea Clinton has finally become a married woman, saying her vows in an idyllic gazebo decked with white roses under the late afternoon summer sun.

The groom was ‘a bundle of nerves’ and the father of the bride ‘so emotional’ he considered just getting his daughter down the aisle was ‘a major accomplishment’. As for the bride, she had, she told friends jokingly, rather hoped for a small wedding.

But it’s hard to be low-key when your big day is hailed as America’s ‘Royal wedding’, and last-minute preparations include shutting down a chunk of federal airspace, with the secret service making sure access roads to the venue are secure.

Fans' fury as comedian jokes Croc Hunter Steve Irwin's 'creepy' daughter Bindi 'needs a slap in the face'

Huge fan base: Bindi, 11, playing around with a crocodile toy on tour in the US.Popular: Bindi is in Washington promoting her new movie with mother Terri and brother Robert.Daddy's girl: Bindi with father Steve Irwin, 'The Crocodile Hunter' and mother Terri.Under fire: comedian Fiona O'Loughlin

Bindi Irwin, the 11-year-old daughter of the late adventurer Steve Irwin, has been described as 'a bit creepy' by a female comedian - to a chorus of outrage.

With a gesture to the audience of a TV music quiz show, Australian Fiona O'Loughlin also suggested that Bindi needed a slap in the face.

Adding to the insults, Miss O'Loughlin then performed an exaggerated impersonation of the child star's voice.
Bindi and her mother Terri have come in for criticism by those who say the youngster has been groomed too quickly for showbusiness and is missing out on the fun that other children enjoy.

The claims have been denied by Mrs Irwin, whose husband died in 2006 when he was stabbed in the heart by a stingray barb off the Queensland coast, and by Bindi herself.

But Bindi, who has starred in her own TV show and sings and dances in Australia and the United States, also has a large fan base and her admirers have pounced on Miss O'Loughlin.
TV viewers swamped the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's switchboard after the show, describing her as 'tasteless', 'un-Australian' and 'a bully'.

Miss O'Loughlin defended her comments, saying she did not know what all the fuss was about.

'It was part of some banter on a comedy panel show,' she said.

'I'm a comedian and comedians make fun of people we know. I've said worse about myself.'

But her outburst stunned other panelists, among them Chris Durling, a former member of Bindi's singing and dancing group Bindi's Crocmen.

He said Bindi was 'gorgeous' and down to earth, adding, 'what you see is what you get'.

It was then that Miss O'Loughlin cut in with: 'Yeah, a freak show'.

Bindi and her mother are in America to promote Bindi's new film, Free Willy 4, and have not commented on the comedian's outburst.

Newspaper readers were quick to add their criticism, one commentator in Sydney's Daily Telegraph describing Miss O'Loughlin as being 'no better than a school yard bully.'

Japan's Princess Aiko, 8, misses school after being bullied by 'violent' boys

Japan's eight-year-old Princess Aiko has missed several days of classes after being bullied by boys at her primary school, a spokesman for the royal family said.

The revelation is likely to shock the country as the imperial family is treated with deep reverence.

Before Tokyo's defeat in World War II, Princess Aiko's great-grandfather, Emperor Hirohito, was worshipped as a living god.

The spokesman for the Imperial Household Agency said the princess complained of a stomach-ache, expressed deep anxiety, and has not been back to school since coming home early on Tuesday.
An investigation had revealed that she and several other students had suffered 'violent things' from boys in another class. The spokesman did not elaborate.

The news provided a rare glimpse into the private affairs of the world's oldest hereditary monarchy, which usually abides by strict, formal protocols and is tight-lipped about personal matters.

The princess goes to the elite Gakushuin Primary School in Tokyo's central Shinjuku district. A representative of the school said the incident may have been a simple misunderstanding.

'She had decided to leave school, and just as she had returned from changing into her normal shoes from her school shoes, I hear it was two boys that approached very suddenly and nearly collided with her, which scared her,' school director Motomasa Higashisono told reporters.

Japanese schoolchildren often have a separate pair of shoes for school use.
Aiko is the daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito, son of the current emperor, and Princess Masako. The Imperial Household spokesman declined to comment on the reaction of her parents or when she would return to school.

Naruhito is to visit Africa starting Saturday but won't be accompanied by Masako, who hasn't attended official duties for several years.

She has long suffered from a nervous disorder attributed to the difficulties of adjusting to palace life and the pressure to bear a son.

After suffering a miscarriage in 1999, Masako gave birth to Aiko in 2001. The lack of a male heir fanned a movement to change the law to allow Aiko to succeed her father.

But Naruhito's younger brother, Prince Akishino, and his wife Princess Kiko had a baby boy in 2006, who is now third in line to the throne.

'Consumers are reverting back to heritage brands which will last longer than the Christmas season.'

The Dream Dozen includes Monopoly City, a modern-take on the traditional boardgame, cute hamsters from Go Go Pets and a multimedia digital camera.

It will hit the shops on October 26, to coincide with the worldwide release of the film.

The first disc will boast the original album masters of some of Jackson's biggest hits, arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film.

The disc will end with two versions of This Is It, which features in the film's closing sequence.

The second disc contains previously-unreleased versions of some of the artist's classic tracks and a 'touching' spoken word poem titled Planet Earth.

John McClain, co-producer of the album, has said of the new track: 'This song only defines, once again, what the world already knows - that Michael is one of God's greatest gifts.'

The album will boast a 36-page, commemorative booklet featuring exclusive photos of Jackson from his last rehearsal.

There has been speculation that further new material from the star could emerge as the singer's estate is sifted through.

Sales of Jackson's back catalogue rocketed following the singer's death. An exhibition crammed with Jackson's belongings will premiere in London later this month.

Staples Centre , Michael Jackson tribute pixs, jackson childrens , An elegant balance between entertainment and eulogy

Balancing the delicate choices about entertainment vs. eulogy, the Michael Jackson memorial worked incredibly well as both without bowing to the expectations of either.
Tuesday's event as Staples Center was under a global microscope of fans, media and harrumphers, and few in the house -- and likely at home -- could argue its elegance, sense of purpose and breadth of emotions.

There was no glitzy entertainment in the interim, nothing really for the crowd to do. It was a surreal experience to be among 17,000-plus people sitting quietly for the first dozen minutes or so, until many felt comfortable talking among themselves.

Overall, there were many more smiles and laughs than tears during the two-hour-plus event. There also was a deliberate and noticeable lack of flash, again straddling that line between the showbiz so many craved and the sorrow so many felt.

Once the speakers and singers began, there was an unhurried pace -- far from the showbiz spectacle many expected, even assumed. A performance followed each eulogy, and the song choices mostly eschewed Jackson's huge hits for lesser-known material sung with a purpose.

Everyone who stepped to the podium seemed to have a singular purpose in their words. The Jackson family's pastor, Lucious Smith, offered words of comfort after loss. Queen Latifah spoke for the legions of Jackson's fans, recalling how she and her brother tried to master the Robot after buying the "Dancing Machine" 45. Kobe Bryant stressed the King of Pop's huge-scale humanitarian efforts.

Sharpton focused on Jackson as a bridge builder and a barrier smasher between races and cultures.

There was a little buzz in the room as he took the stage. The fiery orator seized the room immediately. "It was Michael Jackson who brought blacks and white and Latinos and Asians together," he boomed, earning one of the biggest cheers of the day.He also offered one of the event's best lines in any context. Speaking directly to Jackson's three children -- and likely to his many detractors -- he said, "Wasn't nothing strange about your daddy; it was strange what your daddy had to deal with."

The three most affecting speakers -- Berry Gordy, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Brooke Shields -- offered up very succinct and very different points about Jackson's life.
Shields gave a perspective with which few can really identify: the loss of innocence of a child star. Her remembrances of their laughing together and just being "two little kids having fun" were particularly moving, driving home the fact that Jackson never really had a childhood -- and won't get a chance at golden years either.

The performances ranged from outstanding to "thanks for coming out." Stevie Wonder began by saying, "This is a moment that I wished I didn't have to see coming." His soulful, sorrowful, heart-wrenching delivery of "They Won't Go When I Go" easily was the best of the day. At the other end of the spectrum, Mariah Carey made a number of missteps during her version of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" early on.

The service had an undeniably Christian tone, which might raise a few eyebrows because of Jackson's high-profile conversion to Islam. But the service worked on so many levels: memorial and entertainment, mourning and celebration, remembrance and farewell. And after a finale of "We Are the World" that featured a stage packed with performers, the Jackson family was alone onstage.

Jermaine and Marlon lamented the loss of their brother, but it was Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris, who left the crowd -- and the world -- with the most moving words of the ceremony.

"Ever since I was born," she began, sobbing and barely mustering the strength to speak, "Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just want to say I love him so much."

The wave of emotion washed over the room, with many audibly crying. It was an incredibly affecting end to an alternately somber and joyous day.
