the brave pilot who saved three passengers before perishing in a ball of flames
* Passengers jumped to safety but sudden change of weight sent blimp soaring skywards
* Investigators piecing together last moments of doomed flight
* Wife of Australian pilot pays tribute to 'hero' who stayed at controls
Investigators were today piecing together the last moments before a a Goodyear blimp burst into flames and plunged to earth in a weekend crash in Germany.
The pilot, Michael Nerandzic, 53, was killed but three passengers managed to jump to safety when the airship caught fire as it was coming in to land at the Reichelsheim aerodrome near Friedberg.
When the airship was just two metres from the floor, Mr Nerandzic told his passengers, all journalists, to jump to the ground while he tried to land safely.
But once the three had leapt clear, the sudden loss of weight caused the blimp to soar skywards and burst into flames before crashing to the earth in a chilling echo of the Hindenburg disaster.

Australia bans cattle exports to 11 Indonesia abattoirs over cruelty
Australian television yesterday aired footage of cattle being treated inhumanely prior to slaughter in Indonesia.
Australia suspended live cattle exports to 11 Indonesian abattoirs today and announced a review into the A$320 million (RM1 billion) trade after graphic footage was broadcast of Australian cattle being inhumanely slaughtered.
“I have decided to halt the trade of live animals to the facilities identified by the footage. I reserve the right to add further facilities to the banned list,” Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig said in a statement.
“I will appoint an independent reviewer to investigate the complete supply chain for live exports up to and including the point of slaughter,” he said.

Japan PM, facing no-confidence vote, says won’t quit
A file photo of Naoto Kan (R) and Ichiro Ozawa in Tokyo. The ruling party power broker has hinted he would back the no-confidence motion if the premier refused to quit
Unpopular Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan today refused to step down in the face of a no-confidence motion in parliament this week, saying he wanted first to resolve the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.
Analysts expect Kan to survive the vote, which could be submitted as early as tomorrow, but say he will still face major hurdles pushing policies through a fractious parliament, including an extra budget to help pay for the recovery from the damage caused by the huge earthquake and tsunami in March which devastated the Fukushima nuclear plant.
“I cannot give up the responsibility to do what needs to be done now. I would like to resolve the nuclear crisis first,” Kan told a panel in parliament.
“I am determined to perform my duty.”

Search parties scouring the sea bed off Brazil’s northeast coast have recovered the second of two flight recorders from the Air France aircraft that crashed into the Atlantic in 2009, investigators said today.
The discovery of the audio recorder, two days after the flight data recorder was fished up, brings investigators even closer to the reason for the crash as it should hold recordings of cockpit conversations during the flight’s final moments.
“The investigation team localised and identified the Cockpit Voice Recorder at (2150 GMT) on Monday 2 May, 2011,” France’s BEA air accident inquiry office said. The device was hauled up to the team’s ship at 0240 GMT (0940 Malaysian time) today.

Hungarian sludge firm CEO faces no charges
A judge on Wednesday dismissed prosecution demands that the head of a metals company linked to Hungary's devastating red sludge spill be charged with negligence and he has been released from police custody, his lawyer said.
Appearing after the closed court hearing reviewing the case, Zoltani Bakonyi's lawyer, Janos Banati, said the judge ruled in his favor after finding that prosecutors couldn't substantiate their argument that Bakonyi did not sufficiently prepare emergency warning and rescue plans in case of accidents like the sludge spill.
Banati said prosecutors were preparing an appeal.

Plane makes emergency landing - on a busy motorway at rush hour
Commuters stuck in heavy traffic in Atlanta last night were left stunned when they discovered the cause of the congestion was more than a conventional rush hour snarl-up.
Making their way home at around 5pm, stunned drivers looked on as a small plane made a smooth emergency landing on a busy stretch of motorway.
In a remarkable feat, the aircraft managed to touch down safely without hitting a single car.
No injuries were reported, despite the fact that the Piper Saratoga blocked at least four lanes of traffic.
American television footage shows vehicles queuing for miles on Interstate 85, just as the evening rush hour began.
A few hours later, the plane was hauled away from the southbound stretch of road, in north east Atlanta.
It had been due to land a few miles away, at Peachtree DeKalb Airport.
The pilot, identified in reports as Matt Conway, blamed mechanical problems for the emergency landing.
