Opera star Andrea Bocelli has praised his mother for rejecting the advice of doctors to abort him.

The blind singer, who was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma as a baby, has revealed his mother Edi was warned he would be born with some disability.

He interrupted a show to recount a 'little story' of how a pregnant woman was admitted to hospital with appendicitis.

After being treated, the doctors suggested the woman should consider an abortion, the Italian singer revealed to his audience.

They had told her it was the 'best solution'.

'But the young brave wife decided not to abort, and the child was born,' he said. 'That woman was my mother, and I was the child.'

He added: 'Maybe I'm partisan, but I can say that it was the right choice.'

Bocelli, 51, does not explain why doctors recommended an abortion at a time when it was still illegal in Italy. The present law dates from 1978.

Nor does he describe the medical condition with which doctors suspected he might be afflicted.

Bocelli, who has sold 70million records worldwide, lost his vision completely at the age 12 after he was hit on the head during a game of football.

Twitter is probably best known for its celebrity users who discuss their lives down to the most trivial detail.

So it is quite a surprise that the most influential Briton on the social networking site is a virtual unknown.

Pete Cashmore, 24, is a Scottish internet entrepreneur and social media guru, who has 1.8million followers on the site.

He beat Stephen Fry into second place, even though the comedian is credited with sending Twitter's profile soaring with his updates and banter with celebrity friends. Fry even used it to send out messages when he was trapped in a lift earlier this year.

Cashmore is chief executive of Mashable, one of the biggest technology blogs.

He founded the firm in 2005 from his bedroom in his parents' home in Banchory, near Aberdeen, and now oversees a business with revenues of seven-figures with offices all over the world.

On Twitter he uses his 'tweets' - 140-character updates - to break the latest stories from his blog and discuss them. Recent messages have been on McDonald's adding free wi-fi to its stores, Google Earth installed in Audi cars and his top ten digital gifts for Christmas.

He has proved popular with the public because his tweets discuss technological changes in terms of everyday life issues, such as shopping, music and social networking.

The list of the most influential Britons on Twitter was compiled by mobile phone maker INQ.

It calculated an 'influence rating' for each 'tweeter' by measuring how many followers they had, the rate and number of tweets, how many times their posts were linked to by other users and how many times other users mentioned them.

Scottish tennis star Andy Murray, in 11th place, was the most influential sportsman.

Sarah Brown, the Prime Minister's wife, at number 14, was the most influential British political figure, followed by London mayor Boris Johnson at 18.

Mrs Brown has one million followers while the official Labour Party's account only has 8,200.

Jackson family order new autopsy, anger mounts

The family of Michael Jackson ordered a second autopsy of the tragic pop icon yesterday as associates told of mounting anger over “unanswered questions” surrounding the superstar’s death.

Los Angeles police yesterday conducted a second interview with doctor Conrad Murray, the only person with him when he collapsed. A spokeswoman for the cardiologist said he “clarified some inconsistencies” over the death.

“Investigators say the doctor is in no way a suspect and remains a witness to this tragedy.” Frustrated by the lack of hard information, the family requested a second autopsy on Jackson’s body which was being kept at an undisclosed location, officials and local media reports said.


Late yesterday, The Los Angeles Times reported the autopsy had been completed but there was no word on the findings.
“We don’t like what’s going on,” family patriarch Joe Jackson told People magazine. The Jacksons later issued a statement to fans describing the death as

“one of the darkest moments of our lives.” The Los Angeles Coroner’s office said Friday a preliminary autopsy on Jackson was inconclusive and a final cause of death would not be known until exhaustive toxicology tests are completed in “six to eight weeks.” According to The Times, which cites Pennsylvania forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, the coroner’s office probably kept Jackson’s brain even after his body had been released to the family in order to conduct a neuropathology test.

This test could reveal whether the singer’s brain had been damaged by drug abuse and whether he had suffered overdoses in the past, the paper said.
