Hundreds of victims of an earthquake that struck western China were cremated Saturday as necessity forced local Tibetans to break with centuries-old "sky burial" traditions.

About 1,000 monks were on hand on a mountain beside Jiegu, the hardest-hit area by Wednesday's earthquake, to chant Buddhist prayers as the bodies were set on fire.

While the cremation took place, rescue workers were still searching through rubble in this remote western region in a bid to find any remaining survivors, with officials saying the death toll had climbed to 1,144.

The real faces of the crippled King Tutankhamun, who walked with a cane, and his incestuous parents

Antiquities expert Dr Zahi Hawass (right) announces today in Cairo's Egypt Museum that the mummies in front of him have been identified as Tutankhamun's father, mother and grandmother by using DNA

King Tut's father Akhenaten (left) and mother (right) who has been identified for the first time using DNA, were brother and sister. The royal family were seen as living deities so incest was an acceptable way of retaining the sacred bloodline

King Tutankhamun was a hobbled, weak teenager with a cleft palate and club foot. And he probably has his parents to blame.

For the mother and father of the legendary 'golden' boy pharaoh were actually brother and sister.

The startling discovery was revealed today by a team led by Egyptian antiquities expert Dr Zahi Hawass. They identified the mummies of both his parents and two of his grandparents by studying DNA samples over two years.
King Tut has fascinated the world ever since his ancient tomb was unearthed by the British archaeologist Dr Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in 1922.

Stunning funerary treasure was found in his tomb, including an 24.2lb solid gold death mask encrusted with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones.

Rumours of a curse arose after Dr Carter's benefactor Lord Carnarvon died suddenly a few months after the tomb was opened, even though Dr Carter went on to live another 16 years.

King Tut was known to be the son of the 'heretic' pharaoh Akhenaten, who tried to reform the Egyptian religion during his rule from 1351 to 1344BC. But the identity of his mother had been shrouded in mystery until now.

Incest was rife among the boy king's family because pharaohs were believed to be descended from Gods.

Therefore it was an acceptable way of retaining the sacred bloodline. King Tut's own wife Ankhesenpaaten, was his half-sister as they shared the same father.

But Dr Hawass' team found generations of inbreeding took their toll on King Tut - the last of his great dynasty.

The bone disease he suffered runs in families and is more likely to be passed down if two first-degree relatives marry and have children.

They described him as: 'A young but frail king who needed canes to walk.' This explains the presence of more than 100 canes in his tomb, which he would have needed in the afterlife.

Tut, who became pharaoh at the age of 10 in 1333 BC, ruled for just nine years until his death. He was the last of the royal line from the eighteenth dynasty of the New Kingdom.
The sickly teenager was not murdered but died from complications arising from a broken leg exacerbated by malaria, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association today.

The theory he was assassinated stemmed from the fact that he was the last ruler of his dynasty and had a hole in the back of his head.

In 2005 Dr Hawass announced his team had found no evidence for a blow to the back of the head, and the hole was from the mummification process.

The cause of King Tut's death has long been disputed among historians, with many speculating that he was murdered.

Theories that he was assassinated stemmed from the fact that he was the last ruler of his dynasty and had a hole in the back of his head.

However, in 2005 Dr Hawass announced his team had found no evidence for a blow to the back of the head, and the hole was from the mummification process.
King Tut was succeeded by the high priest Ay for four years - who also married his widow Ankhesenpamon.

Ay was followed by the military leader Horemheb who ruled for 26 years until he ceded power to Ramses, founder of the 19th dynasty.

The researchers studied 16 mummies from the Valley of the Kings. They revealed that beneath the golden splendour in which they lived, ancient Egypt's royals were as vulnerable as the lowliest peasant to disease.

Three other mummies besides Tut's showed repeated malaria infections and incestuous marriages only worsened their maladies.

However, analysis of King Tut's family disproved speculation his family suffered from rare disorders that gave them feminine attributes and misshapen bones, including Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that can result in elongated limbs.

The theories arose from the artistic style and statues of the period, which showed the royal men with prominent breasts, elongated heads and flared hips.

'It is unlikely that either Tutankhamun or Akhenaten actually displayed a significantly bizarre or feminine physique,' the team said.

One of the most impressive-looking mummies who was studied was King Tut's grandmother, Queen Tiye. She was the chief wife of Amenhotep III and mother of King Tut's father Akhenaten. She was the first queen to figure so prominently beside her husband in statues and temple reliefs.

Queen Tiye held much political influence at court and acted as an adviser to her son after the death of her husband. A lock of her hair was found in a miniature coffin in King Tut's tomb.

Her tomb was identified by matching the labelled hair in Tut's tomb with the well-preserved hair on her mummy.

The ancient Egyptians were very concerned with maintaining their hair to promote their social status. They devised remedies for baldness and graying and regularly washed and scented their hair. Adults sometimes wore hairpieces, and had elaborate styles.

Hair does not continue to grow after death, instead the skin retracts around the follicles as it dries, making the hair jut out more prominently.

INCEST AND ROYALTY

King Tut (pictured below) belonged to the 18th dynasty of Egyptian kings during the period of the New Kingdom. His genealogy is complex as there was considerable inter-marriage within his family.
The pharaohs believed they were descended from the gods and incest was seen as acceptable so as to retain the sacred bloodline. King Tut was born c.1341 BC. His father was Akhenaten, first known as Amenhotep. Tutankhamun's mother has been confirmed as Mummy KV35YL, a sister of Akhenaten. Tut's stepmother was Nefertiti, the chief wife of Akhenaten. In c.1348 BC Ankhesenamun was born to Akhenaten and Nerfertiti, making her Tut's half-sister. At the age of ten Tut married her. He died at the age of 19.

Brittany Murphy’s autopsy report leaked and graveyard Forest Lawn cemetery exposed.

As reported in the LA Now, the L.A. County coroner's office is under scrutiny following the release of confidential information about the autopsy of Brittany Murphy. The leak was made to, and published by TMZ and included “details about prescription drugs that the coroner's office found in her home.

The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner official released the following statement regarding the leaks. "The inquiry into the death is ongoing, and it is the policy and practice of the Department of Coroner to only release detailed information in cases where the final cause of death has been determined and the case investigation has been completed and closed by the deputy medical examiner."

Assistant Coroner Ed Winter said initial autopsy reports showed the cause of death may have resulted from “heart-related causes”. The autopsy - completed on 22 December - included toxicology tests that will not be available until sometime within the first 2 weeks in February 2010.

Since the death of Brittany Murphy there are over 4 million internet references to the autopsy and over 35,000 sites referencing the autopsy photos – and increasing in numbers. There is no indication that the confidential autopsy information leaked included any photos, yet the curious continue to search. The lack of photos and increased searching by web users has resulted in numerous “scam” sites, some that launch computer viruses on the unexpected.

However, funeral photos labeled as those of Brittany Murphy, by PacificCoastNews.com., were posted today on zimbo.com. Additional photos were also posted on view.picapp.com.

Brittany Murphy's husband and mother made a frantic attempt to revive her before paramedics arrived ... this according to notes written by an investigator from the L.A. County Coroner's office. And, there were a shocking number of strong prescription meds on Brittany's nightstand.

TMZ has reviewed the documents, written by Investigator Blacklock. According to his notes, Brittany Murphy "had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" for 7 to 10 days prior to her death. According to the notes, Murphy went into the bathroom at around 7:30 AM Sunday and shut the door.

A half hour later Brittany's mother, Sharon Murphy, went to check on her daughter, opened the bathroom door and "discovered the decedent lying on the floor unresponsive." According to the notes, Sharon yelled for help. Brittany's husband, Simon Monjack, who was in bed, heard the screams and ran to the bathroom.

According to the notes, Sharon called 911 and Simon "attempted to revive the decedent by placing her in the shower and running the water."

The notes continue -- "The decedent remained unresponsive and purged her stomach contents prior to the arrival of the paramedics."

When the paramedics arrived, Brittany was "without signs of life."

Paramedics moved Brittany from the bathroom to the master bedroom, where they found a slew of prescription drugs -- "A check of the nightstands revealed large amounts of prescription medication in the decedent's name. Also noted were numerous empty prescription medication bottles in the decedent's husband's name, the decedent's mother's name and unidentified third party names."

According to the notes, the medications included Topamax (anti-seizure meds also to prevent migraines), Methylprednisolone (anti-inflammatory), Fluoxetine (depression med), Klonopin (anxiety med), Carbamazepine (treats Diabetic symptoms and is also a bipolar med), Ativan (anxiety med), Vicoprofen (pain reliever), Propranolol (hypertension, used to prevent heart attacks), Biaxin (antibiotic), Hydrocodone (pain med) and miscellaneous vitamins.

The notes say, "No alcohol containers, paraphernalia or illegal drugs were discovered."

According to the notes, "The night prior to her death, the decedent had consumed some noodles, leftover Thai food, Gatorade, water and tea with lemon."

The notes also say Brittany had a history of hypoglycemia and was hospitalized in April 2009 for low blood sugar while on location in Oregon."

Monjack told the investigator during the 7 to 10 days prior to her death, Brittany complained of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pains but he was not overly alarmed because "she often suffered from severe menstrual pains."

Summary of Autopsy

The autopsy report for Brittany Murphy indicated “there was ‘no evidence of trauma’ and Murphy’s body appeared to be of ‘normal’ weight and not overly thin”. Reports also place her weight at 115 pounds and height at 65 inches.

BMI is a good indicator of a healthy weight and a person with a height of 65 inches at 115 pounds would indicate a healthy weight range. However there is debate using BMI over Ideal Body Weight. According to healthdiscovery.net the ideal body weight range for a female at 65 inches would be 117-130 pounds for a thin frame, 127-141 pounds for a medium frame and 137-155 pounds for a large frame. Ideal body weight has also been described as - average weight that other people of the same gender, age, height and weight would describe as their ideal weight. In her last interview 2½ weeks before her death and posted on the Fox News Network; Brittany Murphy described her weight as “a bit thinner now than what I would like to be."

As previously reported, Brittany dismissed rumors of an eating disorder.

Police investigate the grave of former Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos at a cemetery in Deftera suburb of Nicosia, Cyprus, Friday, Dec. 11, 2009. Grave robbers have stolen the corpse of former Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos from a suburban graveyard during the night, Cyprus police said Friday, a day before the first anniversary of the statesman's death.

The corpse of former Cyprus president Tassos Papadopoulos has been stolen on the eve of the first anniversary of his death.

Grave robbers worked overnight in torrential rain, lifting a marble slab weighing 250kg before unearthing the coffin, police said yesterday.

They sprayed grey paint across the tombstone in Deftera village cemetery, near Nicosia, to obscure the name and birth date of the hardline ex-leader of the Greek Cypriot south.

A former bodyguard who visited the tomb found piles of earth by the graveside and an empty casket.

No one has claimed responsibility and the vandals' motivation was unclear.

'I am appealing to the public to remain calm in the light of this provocation. I cannot describe this act any other way,' Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias said from Brussels, where he was attending an EU summit.

'This is a sacrilege,' he told reporters. 'It is an immoral and condemnable act which is a blight to our culture and respect for our dead.'

The grave was thought to have been emptied overnight with the vandals shifting a 250 kg slab of marble covering the tomb before digging into the grave.

Vandals left a Greek Orthodox icon placed in the casket by relatives when Papadopoulos was buried.

Papadopoulos was president of Cyprus from 2003 to 2008, losing his bid at re-election to Christofias, a former coalition partner in his centre-left government.

During his term, he led Greek Cypriot rejection of a United Nations reunification blueprint on Cyprus, split in a 1974 Turkish invasion after a brief Greek inspired coup.

Papadopoulos was admired by many Greek Cypriots for standing up to the international community and rejecting the plan.

For some others, he sowed division in the Greek Cypriot community.

Christofias is now engaged in talks with the Turkish Cypriot community on reuniting the Mediterranean island as a bizonal bicommunal federation.

Papadopoulos's family said they would go ahead as planned with a religious service commemorating him tomorrow.

'This sacrilege, apart from the sadness and anger it has caused, cannot in any way bury the politics and the legacy which Tassos Papadopoulos left behind,' it said in a statement.

'Wherever he is now, his voice will continue to be heard during these difficult times for our national cause.'

A heavy smoker, Papadopoulos died at the age of 74 on December 12 2008.
