Kingston DataTraveler 200 hits the magic 128GB mark

USB flash drives have been around for so long now that there's hardly anything to get excited about other than their gigabyte count. In a day and age where 4GB flash drives are literally being given out on the streets (or at least in almost every press conference we attend), it's nice to see that flash drives have defeated the evil 16GB threshold and have reached the highly respectable 128GB count. The only worrying thing about this trend is that USB flash drives such as Kingston's DataTraveler 200 may eventually spell the end of portable hard drives as we know them.

No pricing details available for these babies just yet, but we are told that they come with a 5-year warranty (provided they don't go obsolete by then).

Neda, young girl brutally killed in Iran, becoming symbol of rebellion

A slain protestor in Tehran, popularly known as Neda Iran, has become the face of the country's protest movement.

The woman, said to be 27-year-old philosophy student Neda Agha Soltan, was killed by members of the feared Basij militia during protests against alleged election fraud last week.

Her name is Nead which means "voice" in Farsi, and her death has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian rebellion.

The fresh-faced teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for Iran's pro-democracy protesters.

The graphic video was originally posted to Facebook by an Iranian expatriate in Holland who said it was sent to him by a friend in Tehran, a doctor who tried to save the girl.

Death toll rises to 9 in D.C. train crash.

At least six people were killed and at least 75 injured in Washington on Monday when one Metro subway train slammed into another on the outskirts of the city during the afternoon rush hour, emergency officials said.

The District of Columbia Fire Department said nine people were confirmed dead. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said rescue workers treated 76 people at the scene and sent some of them to hospitals, six with critical injuries. A search for further victims continued into the night.

Metro chief John Catoe said the first train was stopped on the tracks, waiting for another to clear the station ahead, when the trailing train, one of the oldest in the Metro fleet, plowed into it from behind.Officials had no explanation for the accident.

Each train had six cars and was capable of holding as many as 1,200 people. Safety board member Debbie Hersman said the trains were bound for downtown. That would mean they were less likely to be filled during the afternoon rush hour.

More than 200 firefighters from D.C., Maryland and Virginia eventually converged on the scene.

One man said he was riding a bicycle across a bridge over the Metro tracks when the sound of the crash got his attention.

"I didn't see any panic," Barry Student said. "The whole situation was so surreal."

Passenger Jodie Wickett, a nurse, told CNN she was seated on one train, sending text messages on her phone, when she felt the impact. She said she sent a message to someone that it felt like the train had hit a bump.

"From that point on, it happened so fast, I flew out of the seat and hit my head." Wickett said she stayed at the scene and tried to help. She said "people are just in very bad shape."

"The people that were hurt, the ones that could speak, were calling back as we called out to them," she said. "Lots of people were upset and crying, but there were no screams."

The Red Line, a U-shaped route that connects Montgomery County's suburbs with central Washington, is the Metro's busiest line. The crash occurred around 5 p.m., among the system's busiest hours, on a surface-level section of track between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations, near a New Hampshire Avenue overpass.

MSI X340 slim notebook

Notebooks have been getting slimmer and lighter by the day, and this new one from MSI is no exception. Called the MSI X340, this notebook belongs to a whole family of slim, light and portable notebooks called the X series.

Held at Jaya 33 shopping mall, the launch event not only featured the X340, but also showcased some of it's X series compatriates like the X320, X400, X600 and the Wind Top AE1900 All-in-One touch-screen desktop.

Featuring a 13-inch LCD display, the X340's 16:9 aspect ratio makes it perfect for watching movies in full screen without having to make do with the annoying black bars on the top and bottom. I know it's a pretty minor issue to address, but if it annoys me, it probably annoys some of you guys too.

The display on the X340 is LED back lit, so you know that it's made to be battery efficient. The other plus side about it being LED back lit is that it provides better color gamut and brightness levels. Speaking of battery efficiency, the X340 is also equipped with MSI's ECO Engine power management system that lets you select one of five different preset modes that range from super battery savings to super processing power.

Powered by Intel Centrino Processor Technology, the X340 runs the latest Intel Core 2 Solo ULV Processor on the Intel GS45 + ICH9M-SFF Chipset - a combo that further prolongs battery life.

On the left of the bezel, you'll find a D-SUB port, a LAN port as well as a USB port. On the other side, you'll have access to another USB socket, a HDMI jack, audio jacks, and a card reader.

In terms of wireless connectivity, the X340 comes readily equipped with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth capabilities. We're also told that there will be an option to include an IEEE 802.16e WiMAX wireless module, but due to some certification issues, it will only be available sometime next year. Not much of a loss there, since our current WiMAX provider requires us to use their hardware anyway.

Aside from the fact that the MSI X340 doesn't come with an optical drive (much like most of the new slim notebooks these days), I'll have to say that I was pretty impressed by it. It looks the part, weighs the part, and has enough computing power under it's hood to run pretty much anything you would on an ultra portable.

Olympus E-P1 New digital camera

In the world of compact cameras, none stand mightier than those from the Micro Four Thirds segment. The Micro Four Thirds system, a standard created by Olympus and Panasonic, is the closest thing you'll get to a DSLR in a compact form factor as it not only allows the swapping of lenses, but also utilizes the an image sensor of the same size and specification.

The recently announced Olympus E-P1 is a stunning example of what the Micro Four Thirds system is capable of producing. Featuring timeless styling that's reminiscent of the ultra high-end Leicas,the E-P1 reportedly features 13MP RAW, JPEG, RAW+JPEG modes, 1280×720 720p video over 7 minutes, 640×480 video over 14 minutes, ISO 200-6400 and shutter speeds ranging from 60 sec - 1/4000 sec.

Key features

The E-P1 is, essentially, an Olympus E-620 (and by extension an E-30 in most respects) crowbarred into a compact, rangefinder-style body. Aside from the changes necessitated by the removal of the mirror and optical viewfinder - and a slight firmware upgrade (for new live view features, improved image processing) it is as fully fledged as any mid-range SLR. This is quite an achievement.

Interestingly Olympus hasn't just popped the sensor from the E-30 into a smaller body; they've been working hard under the hood too, and the 12.3 MP sensor has had a bit of an upgrade to increase resolution and sharpness - plus a few fixes that show they've been listening to reviewers and users (such as adding the option to apply Art Filters to raw files in-camera).
