Thailand will hold vote before June, says DPM

Abhisit’s term expires at the end of this year

Thailand will hold elections before June, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban said today, providing first test of support for the government since it came to power three years ago in the polarised country.

“I can guarantee it will be before June because the prime minister has made that clear,” Suthep told reporters. “We will fix problems of rising prices and dissolve (parliament).”

Although Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s term expires at the end of this year, the British-born, Oxford University-educated premier has been coy about the timing of an election.

Last week , he said elections could be held by June but would not commit fully, saying Thailand needs to be stable for any poll takes place.
