Mass rally by Thai Red Shirts this Saturday
Come Saturday, Red Shirts anti-government protesters will hold a peaceful mass rally in this capital to commemorate its one-year anniversary of street protests.
The United Front for Democracy against Dictactorship (UDD) leader Jatuporn Prompan said the rally would begin at 3pm at the Democracy Monument.
He said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would speak via video conferencing at the rally.
“Red Shirts leaders who faced terrorism charges and released on bail recently, will also join the rally,” he said.
Red Shirts began their street protests in the capital on March 12, last year, in demanding the dissolution of Parliament.
However, the initial peaceful demonstration ended with unrest in May 19, last year when protesters and troops clashed, leaving 91 people dead and more than 1,800 people injured.
The Yellow Shirts protesters led by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has been encamping near the Prime Minister’s Office here since January 25, in pressuring the government to take stern stand in dealing with the Thai-Cambodian border issue.
