So in love: Brittany cuddles up to her screenwriter husband Simon Monjack at Los Angeles airport in November this year.Police officers arrive at Murphy's Los Angeles home on Sunday morning after the actress was rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected fatal heart attack

Though the first rumor was that Brittany Murphy died in her sleep, new reports claim that she was found unconscious in her shower after suffering cardiac arrest. Her husband, who happens to be writer-producer Simon Monjack, called paramedics, who transported the actress to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was pronounced dead on arrival.

RIP: Brittany Murphy

Though cardiac arrest is the initial suspicion, the LAPD aren't ruling anything out. Murphy has a long but not exactly dense portfolio of projects ranging from films, to music to TV shows. She kicked off her career with the television series Murphy Brown in 1991. She finally began to receive recognition with her role in 8 Mile and Girl, Interrupted. She even dated Ashton Kutcher for a bit back in 2003, which led to the two co-starring in Just Married.

Upon news of her death, Kutcher tweeted: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

While cardiac arrest might go down as the official cause of death, TMZ reports that prescription drugs combined with illness might have led up to the event. According to the site, Murphy was feeling ill with flu-like symptoms and was taking "a lot" of prescriptions. More news as it comes in.

Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.

Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

Murphy was transported to the hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the Hollywood Hills.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Winter said Murphy's family was cooperating with the coroner's investigation but would not be releasing a public statement Sunday. He said funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death, Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Messages left for Murphy's manager, agent and publicist by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed" as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

TMZ.com first reported Murphy's death Sunday morning.

Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her - people that made movies with her, people on a cruise - they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few years. He said he used to be in the mob and served prison time on federal drug charges.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very much."

Born Nov. 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in "Girl, Interrupted," "Clueless" and "8 Mile."

Her on-screen work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's "King of the Hill" and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature "Happy Feet."

She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, "The Expendables," set for release next year.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition, Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not." Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003's romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine," Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

American actress Brittany Murphy has died from a heart attack at the age of 32.

She was found unconscious in the shower by her mother before an ambulance was called to the Los Angeles home where she lived with her British screenwriter husband, Simon Monjack, at 8am yesterday.

When medics arrived she was in full cardiac arrest and they continued giving her CPR until she got to hospital.

But she was unresponsive and pronounced dead on arrival.

Her last film was Sin City in 2005 before she put out a record, Faster Kill Pussycat, that reached number seven in the British charts three years ago.

But Miss Murphy, who used to date actor Ashton Kutcher – who is now married to Demi Moore – also had a reputation as being notoriously difficult to deal with.

She had been making headlines for the wrong reasons in recent months.

She was reportedly fired from an upcoming film being shot in Puerto Rico for being difficult on the set.

Twilight and New Moon star Rachel Lefevre was brought in to replace her.
There were also reports that Miss Murphy’s husband got into a fight with some locals in Los Angeles.

He reportedly called an ambulance yesterday morning saying his wife was ‘sick.’

A neighbour who watched paramedics attempting to revive the star said 'she was fairly obviously dead at that time'.

Speculation began almost immediately about the cause of Murphy's death, which was remarkably similar to that of Michael Jackson on June 25 this year.

While some pointed to drug use - both illicit and prescription - others suggested anorexia could have been to blame.

TMZ, which was first to break the news of Brittany's death, was also the first to report Jackson's demise.

Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton hinted on his website there might have been some other cause behind Brittany's sudden death today.

He wrote: 'Absolutely devastating. Especially because this comes as no surprise! We, and those who knew Brittany personally, saw this coming.'

Yesterday, Murphy's friends said they feared that she died in a similar way to Jackson and Hollywood insiders said she had a long running problem with prescription drugs.

One source said: 'We have been very worried that something like this was about to happen.

'She definitely had a drug problem and we have all begged her to seek help. Sadly our words fell on deaf ears.'

Another added that Murphy, who celebrated her 32nd birthday last month, had struggled to beat a prescription drug problem since becoming hooked on painkillers after undergoing a series of plastic surgery procedures.

According to reports, her mother Sharon Murphy discovered her daughter unconscious in the shower.

Paramedics determined that Brittany was in full cardiac arrest and immediately administered CPR.

They continued mouth-to-mouth as they sped to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, several miles from her home, but Brittany was pronounced dead on arrival at 10.04am on Sunday.
Neighbour Clare Staples, a self-help author who used to date Robbie Williams, said Monjack, 39, appeared 'dazed' as he helplessly watched firefighters trying to resuscitate the actress outside their home, adding it 'looked as though she was dead at the scene'.

Officer Norma Eisenman from the Los Angeles police said an investigation had been opened into her death and have dispatched investigators to Murphy's home in the hills of West Hollywood.

Her house was described as 'a hive of activity' today by Parade Magazine's Jeanne Wolf as police began their investigation and Murphy's family and friends arrived with food platters and flowers for her stunned mother and husband.

'The shame is that every secret of her life will now be revealed,' Wolf said.

An autopsy to determine exactly how she died could be conducted as early as tomorrow.

An investigator from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office was reportedly scheduled to arrive at the hospital today to interview attending physicians.

TMZ reported that the post-mortem would be carried out 'despite Monjack's wishes'.

A coroner’s spokesperson said Brittany’s mother and husband will also be interviewed.

It has also been reported that Murphy's mother told paramedics her daughter suffered from diabetes.

Her rep, Nicole Perna, said in a statement last night: 'In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy.'

Murphy's father Angelo Bertolotti, who separated from the actress's mother when she was a child, said: 'She was just an absolute doll since she was born. Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her - people that made movies with her, people on a cruise - they all loved her. She was just a regular gal.

'She was just talented. And I loved her very much.'

Her Clueless co-star Alicia Silverstone led the tributes: 'I always felt connected to her as we shared a very special experience in our lives together.

'I feel love in my heart for her - and hope she is at peace. This is truly sad. I loved working with Brittany. She was so talented, so warm, and so sweet.'
Murphy always vehemently denied claims she was a drug user.

She said: 'I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work.

'My worst vice is caffeine. [The rumour is] really pretty darn far-fetched - it couldn't be further from the truth. I have known people over the course of my life that have bad problems with drugs, and it's something really serious.'
Earlier this month, Monjack himself was rushed to hospital after a flight to Los Angeles. Murphy had said the episode was 'just an asthma attack', but reports said he was 'incoherent' when he arrived at the hospital.

Brittany, an only child, was born in November 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia, but was raised in New Jersey.

She shot to fame after her breakthrough appearance as Tai in the film Clueless in 1995.

The actress went on to star Girl, Interrupted with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie in 2000 and alongside rapper Eminem in his semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile in 2003.

Brittany played a mentally-disturbed young woman named Elisabeth alongside Michael Douglas in psychological thriller Don't Say A Word in 2001.

She also appeared with Kirsten Dunst in the black comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous in 1999 and Just Married in 2003 with Ashton Kutcher, who she dated for a year after they met on the set.

She also voiced the character Luanne in 231 episodes of animated TV series King Of The Hill.

Yesterday, Kutcher paid tribute to Brittany on his Twitter page and wrote: '2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.

'See you on the other side kid.'
