Michael Jackson's glove was to hide skin problem

Jackson's dermatologist, Dr. Arnie Klein, told CNN that Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease that causes blotches of lightening skin, as well as a form of lupus that led to rashes and flaking of skin on his scalp"His was bad because he began to get a speckled look over his body," Klein said. "All over his body -- but on his face and hands, which is hard to treat.

Dr. James Norlund, a dermatologist, never treated Jackson, but said the singer's use of the gloves and lipstick was consistent with the patterns of vitiligo, since the spots frequently first appear on the hands and face, including the lips.

Klein said he treated Jackson's vitiligo with a cream that eventually bleached Jackson's darker pigmentation to even out his skin color. He said it was that treatment -- not a once-rumored desire by Jackson to be white -- that lightened his skin over the years.

"Michael was black," Klein said. "He was very proud of his black heritage."

Regardless of its origins, the glove was never viewed as anything other than fashion by Jackson's fans, some of whom donned gloves to impersonate him.

At Jackson's memorial service Tuesday, actress Brooke Shields, a close friend of Jackson's, remembered the glove in a light moment during an otherwise emotional eulogy.

"When he started wearing the glove, I was like, 'What's up with the glove?' " she said, drawing laughter from the crowd. "I was like, 'If you're going to hold my hand, it better be the nonglove one because sequins really hurt me.' It would dig in.

"He'd just shake his head and he would just smile."

Example of vitiligo
Vitiligo is an acquired de-pigmenting skin condition that results from loss of functioning melanocytes. There are several diseases marked by a lack of pigment in the skin that are grossly referred to as leukoderma; some are caused by an inability of melancocytes to produce melanin, while others are caused by melanocytes either not being present or being destroyed. Vitiligo causes the the skin to loose it’s pigmentation resulting in white patches.

There is no known cause for vitiligo though doctors and scientists suspect is may be due to an immune system disorder. It does seem to be more common in people with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus

Vitiligo, known as 'leucoderma', is a social stigma. Vitiligo is appearance of single or multiple de-pigmented patches on any part of the body. These patches gradually increase in size & cause lot of psychological stress in the patient. It is an autoimmune condition and may have a genetic predisposition in up to 20% of the cases.

Treatment of Vitiligo usually takes a long time, several years at least. Medical treatment may not help to arrest the spread of de-pigmentation in all patients. In majority of the cases, bio-medical therapy fails to cause re-pigmentation completely. However, re-pigmentation in cases of 'stable Vitiligo' can be achieved by various dermato-surgical techniques although in such lesions might recur.

There is no cure for vitiligo. The goal of treatment is to stop or slow the progression of pigment loss and, if you desire, attempt to return some color to your skin.

It is important if you have the same skin problem as Michael Jackson (the vitiligo) to use sunscreen and protective clothing to protect your skin.

Treatments for vitiligo include medicines, light therapy and surgery. Not every treatment is right for everyone. Many have side effects. Some take a long time. Some do not always work.

May be prescribed topical corticosteroid therapy or topical immunomodulators or photochemotherapy or oral psoralen photochemotherapy (oral PUVA) or Narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) therapy.
